Based on the true 1925 case "The Monkey Trial" (also known as the "Scopes Trial"). An American high school biology teacher was prosecuted by the state government for teaching evolution in class. The case caused a sensation across the United States, drawing support from church groups to the small town, while professors and scientists from another side also came to support, along with continuous media coverage that made the town lively. Political figure Matthew Harrison Brady (played by Frederick March) represented the prosecution, while the defense attorney was the famous lawyer Henry Drummond (played by Spencer Tracy). During the trial, the two faced off, gradually becoming a major debate of the century about evolution versus creation, science versus religion. The title is derived from the Bible, Proverbs 11:29: "He who troubles his own house will inherit the wind."
