Sheba Hart (played by Cate Blanchett) is the new art teacher at the school; she is young, beautiful, and elegant. Experienced teacher Barbara (played by Judi Dench) quietly observes Sheba and gradually becomes her friend. Sheba confides in Barbara about her boring elderly husband, her rebellious daughter, and her son's struggles. The two women form a seemingly warm and harmonious friendship across the generation gap. Barbara inadvertently discovers Sheba's illicit affair with a student, and she forces Sheba to admit to the affair, promising to keep it a secret. However, their friendship begins to sour. Barbara, the keeper of secrets, develops an increasingly possessive attitude towards Sheba, who repeatedly succumbs to the threat of her secret being revealed. Yet, secrets are bound to come out one day, and the meticulous diary of the keeper turns into a notepad filled with scandals.
