Alan (Zach Galifianakis) is 42 years old and still living with his parents. One day, his dad "finally" dies from anger. Alan's friends Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), and Doug (Justin Bartha) decide to take Alan to a place in Arizona for therapy. On the road, they are unexpectedly kidnapped by a man named Marshall. It turns out that this is all the fault of Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong), who escaped from a prison in Bangkok and stole half of Marshall's $40 million worth of gold. To find Chow, Marshall leaves Doug behind and sends the other three to bring Chow back. Alan has been in contact with Chow, and the three soon meet him. To rescue Doug, Chow decides to take the three of them back to his original home to retrieve the $21 million in gold. Just when the four manage to get the gold after many hardships, Chow locks the three of them in the basement and leaves with the gold. Will they be able to save Doug, and what kind of adventure will these four experience?
