A bride (Jeanne Moreau) becomes a widow the moment she steps out of the church, her entire romantic ideal shattered by the death of her lover. She meticulously seeks out the five murderers who caused her husband's death and exacts her revenge one by one. Her actions are entirely based on her loyalty and obsession with love; to achieve her goal, she suppresses her own emotions, because she firmly believes: "You have taken something from me that can never be returned." What remains is a heart devoid of love. "The Bride in Black" is François Truffaut's homage to Hitchcock; he greatly admires this master of tension and once wrote a memoir about Hitchcock. He admires Hitchcock because he is the only "complete" director in the world—both belonging to the public and being personal, both commercial and experimental. Adapted from the romantic novel by American writer William Irish. (Film Biweekly)
