Four-year-old Ponat (played by Violette Chavigny) learns from her father that her mother has passed away due to a car accident. Little Ponat is heartbroken and, due to her father's work, she has to live at her aunt's house. Ponat refuses to accept that her mother is gone; she firmly believes that God will bring her mother back to her. She often hides from everyone, continuing to wait for her mother to appear. No matter how much her father, aunt, or cousins try to comfort her, she clings to her belief. After going to boarding school, classmates tell Ponat that God can help her, and little Ponat strives to be God's daughter because she wants to talk to God and ask Him to return her mother. Little Ponat can never seem to be happy; she misses her mother day and night. Alone, she goes to her mother's grave, and unexpectedly, her mother appears before her, gently teaching her to face her life. Even though she is reluctant to let her mother go, when her father comes to pick her up, she tells him, her mother wants her to learn to be happy…
