Former American soldier Raymond Gaines (played by Dwayne Johnson) has transitioned from his life of warfare to become a helicopter rescue worker for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Despite being dedicated, respected, and trusted in his job, these qualities cannot salvage his failed marriage. After a brief vacation, Raymond returns to work just as a once-in-a-century earthquake strikes Southern Nevada, completely destroying the Hoover Dam. Soon after, another powerful quake hits Los Angeles from San Francisco, and Raymond witnesses the terrifying sight of a thriving city turning into ruins from his helicopter. At this moment, his wife Emma (played by Carla Gugino) and daughter Blake (played by Alexandra Daddario) are in separate cities. To save his two beloved ones, he embarks on a desperate race against time amidst the chaos of the earthquakes...
