Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his colleagues Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Nash (Lukas Haas) fail in a dream theft operation targeting Japanese energy tycoon Saito (Ken Watanabe), who turns the tables on them. Saito coerces Cobb, who is a fugitive due to being wanted, to help him dismantle his competitor's company by planting the idea of giving up the family business and starting his own in the deep subconscious of the sole heir, Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy). To return to the United States, Cobb secretly seeks help from his father-in-law Miles (Michael Caine) and recruits young dream architect Ariadne (Elliot Page), dream forger Eames (Tom Hardy), and chemist Yusuf (Dileep Rao) for the mission. Within the layered dreams, Cobb not only has to deal with Fischer's subconscious instinctive resistance but also confront the destructive presence of his deceased wife Mal (Marion Cotillard); the actual situation is far more dangerous than anticipated...
