The brothers of the Hatakeyama family, Nobuaki (played by Hiroyuki Ikeuchi) and Naomitsu (played by Shun Oguri), have had a deep bond since childhood, and Naomitsu is in love with Aguki (played by Saiyou Shibamoto), the daughter of a great minister. One year, the great minister's family falls ill and perishes, leaving only Aguki behind. The shogun decrees that whichever of the Hatakeyama brothers can marry Aguki will inherit all of the great minister's estate. In his childhood, Naomitsu had taken a thief named Sakuramaro (played by Kei Tanaka) as his subordinate, and Sakuramaro causes a rift between the brothers, leading them to fight against each other. In the chaos, Naomitsu abducts Aguki, but during their escape, they are ambushed by Sakuramaro again, and they soon encounter the infamous thief Tōkyō Maru (played by Hiroki Matsukata). After a fierce battle, Tōkyō Maru is killed by Naomitsu, but his name is passed on to him. From then on, the dashing young man becomes a renowned thief... The protagonist Tōkyō Maru is inspired by the short story "In a Grove" by the author Ryunosuke Akutagawa, which was adapted into the classic film "Rashomon" by Akira Kurosawa.
