Henry Barthes (Adrien Brody) comes to a community school as a substitute teacher. The school is on the brink of collapse due to student rebellion and mismanagement, and a group of teachers led by Doris (Lucy Liu) is suffering greatly. Henry's first class encounters provocations from unruly students, but he cleverly resolves the situation. He wins the admiration of female teacher Sasha (Christina Hendricks). At the same time, his teaching style captures the interest of the students, including Meredith, who is troubled by her weight. She has silently endured the various criticisms and ridicule that come with her size. However, because of the teacher, she seems to find reasons to continue... However, Henry himself is under significant pressure; his grandfather is on his deathbed, and the shadow of his mother's suicide lingers in his mind. One night, he is found alone in tears on the bus. This situation is witnessed by a young prostitute, Erica (Sami Gayle), who has just been abused by a client. She follows him, hoping for his help. He initially refuses her request, but eventually brings her back to his bachelor apartment...
