Even with the help of the funeral director, Ebi-hara (played by Kedoya Nehachi), Tasuku and his wife still need to quickly learn the funeral etiquette. Over the three days of the funeral, they experience the many facets of life and death, with all their reluctance and attachment turning into a wisp of smoke above the crematorium… This film won multiple awards at the 1984 Japan Academy Prize, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress, as well as the Best Director and Best Actor awards at the 1985 Blue Ribbon Awards.
