Sheila (played by Rita Hayworth) is the star of the dance troupe, and her beauty has captivated the hearts of many men, including Martin (played by Robert Benchley), an executive of the troupe. Although Martin is already married, this does not hinder his passionate pursuit of Sheila. To win her favor, he buys an expensive bracelet to give to her, but little does he know that his wife catches him in the act. To maintain his marriage, Martin lies, claiming that the bracelet was a gift from the troupe's director, Robert (played by Fred Astaire), to Sheila. To prove his words, Martin arranges for Sheila and Robert to perform an intimate and steamy dance together. Unbeknownst to him, this act catches the attention of the media, and the next day, Sheila and Robert are already engaged on the front page headlines.
