After escaping from the planet in the first installment, Riddick (played by Vin Diesel) continues to evade bounty hunters by moving between various planets due to his identity as a fugitive murderer. Meanwhile, the entire universe is shrouded in dark terror. A ruler named Lord Marshal (portrayed by Colm Feore) is waging an invasion across the universe under the guise of religion.
