Carol (played by Catherine Deneuve), who comes from Brussels to London, is an employee at a local beauty salon. In this bizarre metropolis, the young and beautiful Carol strives to suppress her restless desires, which manifests in a degree of anxiety and neurosis. Although a young and handsome man, Colin (played by John Fraser), persistently pursues her, Carol prefers to stay close to her sister Helen (played by Yvonne Furneaux). Unlike her easily tense sister, Helen seems to adapt well to society; she is in a relationship with a married man, and they plan to travel to Italy during the holidays. However, Helen's departure pushes Carol's mental state to the brink of collapse, leading to an irretrievable tragedy... This film won the Special Jury Prize and the International Critics' FIPRESCI Prize at the 1965 Berlin International Film Festival.
