Photographer Jeffries (played by James Stewart) breaks his left leg while shooting in the middle of the racetrack and has to rest at home for seven weeks. Aside from the insurance nurse Stella (played by Thelma Ritter) and his girlfriend Lisa Carol Fremont (played by Grace Kelly) who come to care for him daily, the bored Jeffries can only pass the time by watching the daily lives of his neighbors from his window. Living on the second floor of the opposite building is jewelry salesman Lars Thorwald (played by Raymond Burr) and his wife Anna (played by Irene Winston), who are constantly quarreling. One rainy night, Jeffries sees Lars leaving the apartment several times with a suitcase. The next day, he sees Lars wrapping a saw and a knife in newspaper. Jeffries grows suspicious and suspects that Lars has killed Anna and disposed of her body. However, Jeffries did not witness the crime or see a body. What is the truth? Are Jeffries' speculations merely his imagination? How does Jeffries seek evidence to confirm his suspicions?
