Doctor Louis (played by Dale Midkiff) moves from Chicago to a small town with his wife Rachel (played by Denise Crosby), daughter Ellie, and son Gage due to work. Their new home is near a road with a winding path behind the house. Their neighbor, an old man named Jud (played by Fred Gwynne), introduces the path that leads to a pet cemetery where animals killed on the road over the years are buried. On his first day at work, Louis encounters a critically injured patient who dies, and he seems to see the deceased speaking to him, claiming that to thank him for his assistance, they will prevent him from getting close to ghosts. Soon after, his children's cat is killed by a car, and Jud leads Louis to bury it in an Indian burial ground on the hill, where the cat surprisingly comes back to life. Relieved that his daughter won't be sad, Louis discovers that the resurrected cat becomes violently aggressive and foul-smelling. Days later, his young son is tragically killed in an accident, and heartbroken Louis decides to bury his son’s body in the Indian burial ground...
