Caesar (played by Edward G. Robinson) and Joy (played by Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) are old friends who have known each other for many years. One wants to become a notorious gangster, while the other is tired of the violent life and wishes to chase his dream of becoming a dancer. Thus, the two friends embark on vastly different life paths. Caesar joins the crime syndicate led by Boss Vito (played by Stanley Fields) and rises through the ranks over time. However, Caesar is not satisfied with being just a henchman; he plots to kill Vito and takes his place. Meanwhile, Joy works hard to become a dancer and one day meets a stripper named Olga (played by Glenda Farrell), falling in love with her.
