Psychologist Carla (Julianne Moore) does not believe in multiple personality disorder, but her father (Jeffrey DeMunn) asks her to diagnose a strange case of it. The patient David (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) has a mild personality, but instantly transforms into the bold Adam when he receives a phone call. Puzzled, Carla drives to the home of the personality David, only to learn that the real David died years ago in a bizarre murder. Carla is desperate to uncover the connection between Adam and David, but simultaneously discovers that her colleague has died mysteriously, with a cross similar to the one on Adam/David's back found on their corpse. What seems to be a simple medical case is soon shrouded in the shadows of the supernatural, and even Carla’s father cannot escape the curse. What is the truth behind it all?
