The girl Yoshikawa Kaoru (played by Maho Nonami) is very close to her brother Go (played by Shunsuke Matsuoka), almost like lovers. One day, Go Yoshikawa mysteriously disappears, and Kaoru finds a love letter in their apartment written by her high school classmate Izumi Miyamori (played by Kou Shibasaki) to her brother. Izumi had a crush on Go initially, but was thwarted because of Kaoru. Various signs indicate that Go Yoshikawa likely went to Izumi's hometown—Kitarikata Village. This village with an odd name has strange customs; people believe that the souls of the dead attach themselves to scarecrows, so villagers place scarecrows in front of their loved ones' graves, and over time, the faces of the scarecrows gradually transform into that of the deceased. To find her brother, Kaoru eventually arrives in this bizarre village, where she awaits... This film is adapted from the horror manga of the same name by Japanese manga artist Junji Ito.
