Hett (Jeffrey Lynn), Harry (Humphrey Bogart), and Eddie (James Cagney) are all soldiers who once shed blood for their country during World War I. After the war ended, the three men returned to their peaceful lives, but the war changed too much; they could never regain the joyful days of the past. After leaving the military, the sharp-minded Hett became a lawyer, while the honest Eddie planned to become a taxi driver and earn a steady income. The most cunning of the three, Harry, became a bootlegger, as it was the most lucrative job at the time. Soon, Eddie joined in, and they teamed up with Smith (Gladys George).
