Gangster boss Joe Cabot (played by Lawrence Tierney) and his son "Nice Guy" Eddie (played by Chris Penn) gather six robbers to steal a batch of natural diamonds from a jewelry store. These six men do not know each other and are even unaware of each other's names. To maintain secrecy, Joe assigns each of them a color as a code name: Mr. White (played by Harvey Keitel), Mr. Orange (played by Tim Roth), Mr. Blonde (played by Michael Madsen), Mr. Pink (played by Steve Buscemi), Mr. Brown, and Mr. Blue, and stipulates that they cannot disclose any personal matters among themselves. During the robbery, the six men fall into a police ambush, resulting in the immediate deaths of Mr. Blue and Mr. Brown. Mr. White returns to the designated meeting point—a warehouse—with the severely wounded Mr. Orange. Shortly after, Mr. Pink, "Nice Guy" Eddie, and Mr. Blonde arrive, having captured a police officer. The group recalls the events at the scene and concludes that one of them must have snitched to the police. In an effort to uncover the informant, they interrogate and torture the officer, but still cannot ascertain the truth. With these individuals already strangers to one another, suspicion begins to grow, and events spiral completely off the preset track.
