With the outbreak of World War II, Tokashiro Katsu (played by Tetsuro Tanba) receives a draft notice and must bid farewell to his newlywed wife Saki (played by Sachiko Kawashima), who has been married for just six months, and their unborn child as he heads to the battlefield, never to return. In 1946, Saki receives a notification of her husband's death but questions the cause of his demise. After extensive inquiry, she learns that Katsu was executed for evading military service, and she and her daughter cannot享受 the benefits for families of fallen soldiers. Feeling suspicious, Saki perseveres for decades in seeking the truth about her husband. With guidance from the new leadership at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, she locates Katsu's comrades from his unit, discovering the harsh realities that unfolded during the brutal backdrop of the war... This film is adapted from the Naoki Prize-winning novel of the same name by Masaru Yuki.
