In the mid-22nd century, Earth has not become a better place through the advancements of civilization and technology; instead, it has turned into a hopeless wasteland plagued by various forms of greed. A small number of extremely wealthy individuals have abandoned their home planet and created a paradise-like haven in a space station floating above Earth, where they continue to live lives of luxury and pleasure. Meanwhile, the vast majority of the poor are forced to remain on a battered Earth, struggling to survive amidst chaos and despair, while enduring the oppression of ridiculous and harsh federal regulations. They toil to earn a meager living under the industrial system established by the rich, occasionally looking up to the sky, dreaming of migrating to the space station to start anew. Unfortunately, under the iron-fisted control of government official Delacourt (played by Jodie Foster), smugglers repeatedly become debris in space. Max (played by Matt Damon), an ordinary worker exposed to intense radiation, faces death within five days unless he can access the advanced medical system of the space station. Even with only a slim chance of survival, he is determined to reach the Elysium...
