In Wan Chai, Hong Kong, the owner of an electrical shop (played by Bao Qijng) lost her husband early. She and her sister raise her son, A Lai (played by Jacky Cheung). However, A Lai is obsessed with detective novels, remains single at 41, and often talks to his imagined deceased father. At a matchmaking dinner, A Lai meets Ailian, a salesperson from a sanitary ware store (played by Tang Wei). Initially awkward, they later enjoy each other's company in a tea restaurant. However, Ailian is preoccupied with her gangster boyfriend Ah Xu (played by Andy On), so she is indifferent about this arrangement.
