In 1917, the Russian Revolution broke out, and the Tsar and his family were captured and executed. However, increasing rumors suggested that the Tsar's youngest daughter—the most noble Princess Anastasia (played by Ingrid Bergman)—had miraculously survived. Princess Anna would be the sole heir to the dynasty's enormous deposit of ten million dollars in a British bank. In 1928, General Bounine (played by Yul Brynner), on behalf of the exiled Russian Empress (played by Helen Hayes) living in Northern Europe, began his search for the princess. After many twists and turns, he still found no trace of her, until suddenly a deranged woman (played by Ingrid Bergman) was discovered by Bounine in a mental hospital. She bore a striking resemblance to Princess Anna. Under Bounine’s uncompromising supervision, she underwent a transformation from a Cinderella into a lady. However, the exiled Empress in Denmark remained unconvinced, no matter how hard she tried to prove herself as the true princess. Directed by Anatole Litvak, the classic film "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness," starring Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner, won the 1957 Academy Award for Best Actress, marking Ingrid Bergman's successful comeback to Hollywood.
