This film is adapted from Nikolai Gogol's (1809–1852) early work, the historical novel "Taras Bulba" of the same name. The novel portrays the image of the Cossack hero Bulba and celebrates the spirit of national liberation struggle and people's patriotism. A similar theme was previously filmed by a Russian crew in Germany in 1924. In this remake, Soviet actor Bogdan Stupka plays the Cossack old hero Taras Bulba, and Igor Petrenko plays the old hero's youngest son.
