The actress Pepa (Carmen Maura) learns that she is pregnant, but her joy does not last long as her lover Ivan (Fernando Guillén) suddenly goes missing. Pepa tries every means to contact Ivan, but ultimately finds nothing, which drives her to hysteria and unbearable pain. Just then, Ivan's wife Lucia (Julieta Serrano) shows up to create trouble. Soon, Pepa's friend Candela (María Barranco) also seeks refuge out of fear of police arrest. A group of women on the brink of collapse come together to enact a tragicomedy that is both poignant and humorous... This film was nominated for the main competition at the 1988 Venice Film Festival, ultimately winning the Best Screenplay Award; it also received awards for Best Young Film and Best Actress at the 1988 European Film Awards; and the Best Foreign Language Film Award from the New York Film Critics Circle in 1988; and in 1989, it won the Goya Awards for Best Actress (Carmen Maura), Best Editing, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress (María Barranco).
