Tito (Robert Downey Jr.), a well-known writer from Los Angeles, finally embarks on a long-avoided journey home after being separated from his family for fifteen years. In the 1980s, Astoria, Queens, New York. The young Tito (Shia LaBeouf) goes through a tough time, filled with family disputes and breakdowns, and the loyalties and betrayals with his girlfriend, Laurie (Melonie Diaz). He watches as his friends leave him one by one, either succumbing to drugs or ending up in prison. Tito constantly seeks ways to protect himself from harm, trying to rise from the chaos of familial bonds, race, loyalty, sex, and violence. Gradually, he begins to believe that only the power from God can help him survive. The film is adapted from the personal autobiography of director Tito Montiel. It won the Best New Director award at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival in 2006, the Critics' Week award, and the Special Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, among other accolades.
