The story takes place in England in 1921, where the failures experienced during World War I cast a stifling and painful atmosphere over the entire country. Florence (played by Rebecca Hall) is a champion of truth, whose strong sense of justice leads her to expose lies and reveal the truth. She does not believe in the existence of ghosts, only in the malice of the human heart. In a boys' boarding school, rumors of haunting abound, with tales of the ghost of a boy who died under unnatural circumstances lingering in the campus. To dispel the fears of students and parents, the school hires Florence to investigate. Florence quickly gets to work, and under her sharp and capable handling, the truth of the matter gradually comes to light. Just as she believes she has solved the problem and is ready to leave, an event occurs that challenges all her beliefs in life.
