Lady Paladin (played by Alida Valli) is accused of murdering her husband. She hires a prominent lawyer named Anthony (played by Gregory Peck) to defend her. As their relationship deepens, Anthony finds himself gradually falling in love with the beautiful Lady Paladin. However, Anthony is already married to his innocent and kind wife, Gay (played by Ann Todd), and every time he thinks of his wife's face, he feels an overwhelming sense of guilt. But his obsession with Lady Paladin overcomes his guilt. By chance, Anthony discovers that Andrew (played by Louis Jourdan), the servant closest to Lady Paladin, is the most likely suspect. Although there is no concrete evidence that Andrew is the murderer, framing him would be the best way to exonerate Lady Paladin.
