Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant) is a wealthy idle man who meets Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) on a cruise ship. The two enjoy each other's company, and when the ship makes a temporary stop, Nickie takes Terry to a small town to visit his grandmother, where Terry discovers Nickie's talent for painting. Romantic feelings begin to develop between them. When the ship arrives at its final destination, New York, they must part ways but agree to meet again in six months at the top of the Empire State Building. Six months later, Nickie waits alone at the Empire State Building from day until night, but Terry does not show up, and he leaves in disappointment. Meanwhile, Terry is involved in a car accident on her way to the meeting and cannot arrive. Unable to walk, Terry is reluctant to seek Nickie again but unexpectedly meets him again at a dance several months later, by which time Nickie has become a somewhat famous painter. Nickie makes great efforts to finally find Terry's address, preparing to pursue her heart once more. What will be the outcome of this tumultuous romance?
