Cole (played by Tom Cruise) is an extraordinarily talented racer who often claims victory in competitions; racing is an indispensable part of his life. Cole's greatest rival is Robbie (played by Michael Rooker), who was nearly unbeatable before Cole emerged on the scene, but Cole's arrival robbed him of the championship title. In a bid to defeat Cole, Robbie puts in a tremendous amount of effort. During an important race, Cole once again faces off against Robbie, with both showcasing their full strength, but an excessive push leads to an accident, leaving both Cole and Robbie severely injured. In the hospital, Cole meets a doctor named Claire (played by Nicole Kidman), and it isn't long before they fall in love. After Claire’s diagnosis, it’s revealed that Robbie has a head injury and must undergo surgery, which means he will miss an exciting race. At Cole's urging, Robbie reluctantly gives up the race, and stepping in for him is the ambitious Harry (played by Robert Duvall).
