Matt (played by Spencer Tracy) is the editor of a newspaper. With progressive beliefs, he opposes racial discrimination and advocates for freedom and equality. However, when his beloved daughter Joy (played by Katharine Houghton) brings her boyfriend John (played by Sidney Poitier) home, Matt is completely taken aback. It turns out that John is a Black man, something Matt never imagined would happen to him outside of the novels and television shows he usually sees. On one side is his commitment to liberalism, but on the other side are deep-seated prejudices against Black people that he cannot shake off. Matt finds himself in a dilemma, and simultaneously, John's father is also fiercely opposed to the relationship. Faced with immense pressure, Joy and John do not lose heart, and seeing his daughter's strength makes Matt contemplative.
