Two years ago, science fiction writer David Gordon (played by John Cusack) suffered the loss of his wife. Time has not healed the wounds in his heart but has instead deepened his emptiness. To alleviate his loneliness, David decides to adopt a child, a decision that is met with skepticism and opposition from friends and family. Ignoring their concerns, David adopts a little boy named Dennis (played by Bobby Coleman). Although Dennis is cute and charming, he has a very peculiar personality. He claims to be from Mars, spends his days hiding in a cardboard box, refuses to play with other children, and enjoys taking photos with a camera that has no film. Dennis's arrival brings energy back into David's life, along with a long-lost sense of love. However, as life continues, David finds that relating to the Martian boy is not an easy task… This film is based on the award-winning science fiction short story by David Gerrold.
