In the 1950s, “Twenty One” was the most popular quiz show on American television, attracting thousands of viewers. Long-time champion Herb Stempel (played by John Turturro) had won multiple times, but the network's executives felt he had lost his appeal and ordered producer Dan Enright (played by David Paymer) to find a new contestant to replace him. Columbia University honor student Charles Van Doren (played by Ralph Fiennes) was chosen by Dan, naturally becoming the new champion. As audiences were captivated by his knowledgeable and witty answers, Congressman Dick Goodwin (played by Rob Morrow) suspected there was cheating involved in the show. After a detailed investigation, a shocking conspiracy began to surface. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Redford, the film "Quiz Show" is based on true events from the American television scene in the 1950s. The director profoundly depicts this major television scandal, earning nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor at the 67th Academy Awards in 1995.
