In 1930s Berlin, Germany, Nazi forces are rising. American performer Sally (played by Liza Minnelli) is a popular cabaret dancer. British teacher Brian Roberts (played by Michael York), who has just arrived in Berlin, accidentally becomes Sally's roommate while earning a living by teaching English. Sally's attempts to seduce Brian fail, leading her to suspect he might be gay. Sally has a relationship with her friend Max (played by Helmut Griem), only to later discover that Robert has also been involved with Max. Meanwhile, a Jewish man named Fritz falls in love with Robert's student Natalia, a wealthy Jewish girl. To be with Natalia, he converts from Christianity to Judaism. Sally becomes pregnant, but she doesn't know whether the father is Robert or Max. As the Nazi influence in Germany grows stronger, Robert decides to take Sally back to England..... This film was nominated for ten Academy Awards in 1973, ultimately winning eight, including Best Director and Best Actress.
