After 20 years of hard work, the quiet and unassuming middle-aged office worker Katsuhiro Kobayashi (played by Katsuya Kobayashi) finally buys a detached house of his own. He happily moves in with his wife Saeko (played by Mitsuko Baisho), eldest son Masaki (played by Yoshiki Arizono), and daughter Rika (played by Yuki Kudo). However, the initial joy doesn't last long, as Katsuhiro soon becomes worried about his family. Saeko behaves oddly, showing no signs of being a mother; Masaki, a high school student aiming for Tokyo University, locks himself in his room all day, ignoring the outside world; and Rika is obsessed with fantasies, constantly yearning to become a big star. Soon, Grandpa Shukoku (played by Kazuaki Ueki) moves in with them, further intensifying the already tense atmosphere of the Kobayashi family. Additionally, the occasional appearance of termites pushes Katsuhiro's mental state to the brink. Katsuhiro decides to dig a basement for his grandfather, which simultaneously opens the family to an irreversible catastrophe...
