Monte (played by Morgan Freeman) is confined to a wheelchair and no longer has any hope for life. Once a well-known writer, he lost his inspiration after the death of his wife and spends his days drinking, causing his nephew to worry about him. To help him, the nephew finds a small cabin in a secluded town for Monte to relax and heal. At first, Monte is dissatisfied with the quiet town, drinking heavily every day. However, the three little girls from the O'Neil family and their mother (played by Virginia Madsen) catch Monte's attention. As he interacts with them more, Monte begins to like the family and gradually rediscovers the joy of life; the O'Neil sisters experience fatherly love and care through Monte, and their mother feels love again. Everything is moving in a positive direction; although it is still dark at the moment, dawn will eventually come. In the journey of redemption and being redeemed, Monte and the O'Neil family find healing.
