In the 18th century, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (played by Ben Whishaw) was born in the dirtiest and foul-smelling place in Paris—the fish market. Grenouille had an extraordinary innate gift for smell: he could remember every odor, whether stinky or fragrant, and easily distinguish between various scents. When he was 13 years old, he was sold by the director of the orphanage to a tanner. Grenouille lived a life worse than that of a dog in the tannery. By chance, Grenouille showcased his remarkable talent in front of perfume maker Baldini, which led him to work at the perfume shop. However, Grenouille was not content with just creating the most fragrant perfume in the world; he dreamed of learning how to preserve the scents of all things. Baldini told Grenouille that the origin of perfume was in Grasse, where people knew the methods to preserve scents. Grenouille traveled to Grasse with Baldini's recommendation letter. Grenouille fell in love with the body scent of young girls, and in order to preserve this fragrance, he ultimately took the path of a killer.
