The story takes place in England in 1952. By chance, writer Jack (played by Anthony Hopkins) meets a woman named Joy (played by Debra Winger) and her son Douglas (played by Joseph Mazzello). The three quickly become friends. In order to stay in England, Joy, who has been single for many years, decides to marry Jack. However, this marriage does not bring Joy happiness, and she eventually chooses to leave. After being diagnosed by a doctor, Joy learns she has an incurable illness. Upon receiving this news, Jack suddenly realizes that he has always deeply loved this strong woman. He finds Joy, and they reunite. In the years that follow, Jack stays by Joy's side as she battles her illness. Although death looms close, both find their true love in each other.
