For the still single Monsieur Ruebel (Fabrice Luchini), his conservative personality aligns perfectly with his dull profession as a stockbroker. In contrast, he unexpectedly falls in love with the maid Maria (Natalia Verbeke), who is completely outside his social circle. Through Maria, Ruebel meets many women like her, living at the bottom of society yet filled with hope and passion for life. Their positive outlooks not only touch Ruebel but also shake the longstanding conventions he has adhered to. As the initial heat of love fades, many issues gradually emerge.
