Mayo (Richard Gere) is a Navy pilot candidate. By chance, he meets two women, Paula (Debra Winger) and Lynette (Lisa Blount), along with his friend Sid (David Keith), and they spend a joyful time together. Life in the training camp is very tough, and to make matters worse, Mayo finds himself under the strict command of Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.), whose reputation is well known. Lynette is eager to hook up with a flight officer, while Paula deeply falls in love with Mayo. However, for the sake of his future, Mayo and Paula ultimately break up. The news of Lynette's pregnancy leads Sid to abandon his bright future and decide to spend his life with her, but Lynette no longer wants anything to do with Sid, who is now just an ordinary man; moreover, her pregnancy news turns out to be a fabrication.
