In 1954 Germany, the national football team reached the World Cup final in Switzerland. In Essen, Ruhr area, people gathered in the small tavern run by Richard Lubanski (played by Peter Lohmeyer) to watch the TV broadcast. The owner Richard had been imprisoned in a Soviet POW camp for 11 years and has a stubborn and conservative personality. His younger son Matthias (played by Louis Klamroth) idolizes German player Helmut and tries every means to support him in Switzerland. Meanwhile, Paul Ackermann (played by Lukas Gregorowicz), a sports journalist from Süddeutsche Zeitung, is preparing for his wedding with his fiancée when he suddenly receives a task to cover the event in Bern, thus changing their honeymoon destination to Switzerland. On the eve of the final match between Germany and Hungary on July 4, the father finally takes his son to Bern to experience the miracle that occurred there. This heartwarming sports film "The Miracle of Bern" is not only an emotionally stirring family drama but also a touching story that witnesses Germany's post-war reconstruction history, using football to help the nation overcome trauma, heal rifts, and regain confidence. The story is based on the true events of Germany's unexpected victory over Hungary to win the World Cup in 1954. This film received a nomination for Best Cinematography at the 16th European Film Awards in 2003.
