The story takes place in the United States in 1960, where Janet (Carey Mulligan) and her husband Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal) have been married for many years, and their son Joey (Ed Oxenbould) is already 14 years old. The family lives a quiet life. Recently, they moved to Montana, where Jerry found a job as a golf coach. An accident unfortunately causes Jerry to lose his job, plunging the entire family into an economic crisis. After losing his job, Jerry spends his days wandering aimlessly on the streets and later takes a temporary position as a firefighter, which means he is home even less. Janet gradually sees her husband's ineptitude and weakness, and decides to go out and find work to support herself. During this process, she encounters an automobile dealer named Warren (Bill Camp).
