Tora-san returns to inform his family that he plans to get engaged to a single mother he met during his travels, Junko. After Junko's long-missing husband reappears, Tora-san leaves a message and departs. On his journey, Tora-san reunites with an old acquaintance, Utako, in Tsuwano, who has just lost her husband. Out of a sense of responsibility, she lives with her strict in-laws. Tora-san encourages Utako to come to Tokyo and accompanies her to meet her father, a writer who has distanced himself from Utako due to his opposition to her marriage. Tora-san's hope for a romantic development with Utako falters as she decides to dedicate her life to children with disabilities.
