The film is a Latin version of Jane Austen's classic novel "Sense and Sensibility." The story is set in modern-day Los Angeles. The older sister, Nora Dominguez (Camilla Belle), is a law student, while her younger sister, Mary (Alexa Vega), is a dropout who stays at home, only caring about shopping and attending parties for fun. They live a life of extreme luxury in Beverly Hills with their father. Mary refuses to acknowledge her inherited Mexican heritage, and when their father suddenly passes away, their luxurious lifestyle disappears. The sisters not only become poor but are also forced to move from their current home to live with their estranged aunt, Orlia (Adriana Barraza), in a predominantly Latino community in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles.
