Anna (played by Greta Garbo) is a prostitute whose father is addicted to alcohol and completely indifferent to her. Besides taking care of her father, Anna must also look after his mistress, Marthy (played by Marie Dressler). Marthy is a cunning and greedy woman who often takes advantage of Anna. One day, Anna falls ill and enters the hospital; after finally being discharged, she vows never to live the decadent life she once had. She decides to turn over a new leaf. Living on her father's small boat, Anna experiences a period of tranquility until a sailor named Matt (played by Charles Bickford) barges into her life and falls madly in love with her. Matt’s presence makes Anna begin to believe in love and dream about the future.
