Adapted from Victor Hugo's novel "The Man Who Laughs" (L'Homme qui rit, 1869). The protagonist, Gwynplaine, is a noble descendant who falls into the hands of human traffickers as a child, becoming disfigured and bearing a perpetually grotesque smile. A kind-hearted traveling performer, Ursus, adopts him and also takes in the blind girl, Dea, whom Gwynplaine rescues from the snow. The three of them wander the world, making a living through their performances. Later, due to unforeseen circumstances and the needs of the British political scene, Gwynplaine regains his title, but he rejects this filthy gift, preferring to return to his companions in hardship; at this time, Dea is suffering from a serious illness. After the blind girl passes away, Gwynplaine is heartbroken and commits suicide by drowning.
