Boxer Lin Jian'er (played by Wu Qilong) is unwilling to be manipulated by the gangster boss A Yong (played by Chen Songyong). He refuses to throw fake punches and plans to escape with his family but gets caught... Yang Chong (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro), coming from a family of police officers, kills an informant in a reckless act, loses his public office, and commits murder; a group of people down on their luck serve their sentences in the Burning Island prison. Stock tycoon Wu Shida (played by Ng Man-tat) becomes the target of envy among the inmates. Fortunately, drunkard Ah Liang (played by Zhao Ziqiang) and Lin Jian'er come to his aid, with Wu Shida paying to ensure that Lin Jian'er, Ah Liang, and Yang Chong receive care in prison. Soon, the drug lord Gong Tianbao (played by Lau Hsiao-hsien) seeks revenge on Yang Chong, who captured him years ago, but Yang Chong repays kindness with kindness when A Yong attacks Gong Tianbao.
