The story takes place during the American Revolutionary War. Benjamin (played by Mel Gibson) is a French-American who has fought in the French and Indian War and has seen many battles. The brutal war has cost him his beloved wife, and he vows to stay away from war forever. So when the British colonizers bring the war to Benjamin's homeland, he chooses at first not to resist but to evade. Even when he sees his eldest son join the local patriotic militia, he does not step forward to fight. However, when his eldest son is captured by the enemy and his youngest son is killed while trying to rescue his brother, Benjamin can no longer hold back. It is then that he realizes that only by resisting can he save his homeland from peril.
