Robert (Liam Neeson) is a respected clan leader who falls victim to betrayal by the Marquis of Montrose's (John Hurt) henchman Cunningham (Tim Roth) and steward when he seeks a loan to purchase livestock. Not only does he fail to secure the money, but he also loses his dear friend MacDonald (Eric Stoltz) and becomes a fugitive. Later, Cunningham continues to persecute Robert's family, forcing witness Betty (Vicki Masson) to commit suicide and violating Robert's wife Mary (Jessica Lange), who bears the pain and sorrow alone with her kindness and strength.
